"A cheerful frame of mind, reinforced by relaxation is the medicine that puts all ghosts of fear on the run."
George Matthew Adams
Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a therapeutic technique that makes use of mental imagery and concentration to focus intensely on the relaxation of various muscle groups throughout the body. It is often used in guided meditation workshops to help facilitate a heightened state of body awareness while, at the same time, allowing the muscles to release into a very deep state of relaxation and calm. Essentially, it’s what I like to call a “mind massage.”
Like it or not, we live in a stress-filled world. Even so, there are things we can do to keep ourselves from constantly internalizing some of the chaos that surrounds us. We may not be able to get rid of the storms, but we can create a calm within ourselves that will help us to weather them successfully.
Unfortunately, in the fast-paced, tech-savvy, immediate gratification-filled world we live in today, I don’t think many people give enough merit to the idea of self-nurturing; Especially not in the “whole mind, body, spirit” sense of wellness.
Sure, many of us exercise or play sports in the hopes that our physical bodies remain strong and capable enough to keep us on our A-game throughout the work day.
But…I think most of us can relate to the fact that sometimes, our physical strength just isn’t enough to keep us feeling our best.
Sometimes, we just get emotionally, mentally and spiritually worn down. Lack of regular nurturing can do that to a person.
We know that living things — such as plants and pets — blossom when regular care and attention are showered upon them. Why then, should we give short-shrift to doing the same thing for ourselves?
Things that are cared for and looked after properly, thrive. Things that are not…just tend to slowly wither away.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation is all about responding to the matter of self-nurturing with a resounding:
“YES! I need to focus regularly on self-care in order to lead a healthy, well-balanced life!”
Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Meditation therapy is meant to serve as a touchstone for your mental and spiritual rejuvenation. Through regular practice, you’ll be able to detach more easily from the stresses of the week and to dig into an inner fountain of re-invigoration. Ultimately, you will learn to consistently conjure and embrace a calmer, more relaxed state of mind whenever you feel the need to.
